We talk about climate change and carbon emissions. We throw money to help people who have been hit by natural disasters when there is a possibility that we could have prevented them happening in the first place. We throw money to cure diseases that are caused by the poison we eat and that companies manufacture. Jamie Oliver has gone on a crusade to change the way the UK and US eats and thus abolish some of the diseases we need to cure. Why throw money at diseases that were preventable in the first place?

We see human suffering and that is all that matters. We blame global warming for these disasters. We continue with carbon credits because it makes money and perhaps this is a simplistic view but really we need to respect the trees. We need to see beyond the superficial and to make a positive move towards protecting our natural world. Newton's Third Law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

A Simplified Look at Photosynethesis
6 CO2 (g) + 6 H2O (l) → C6H12O6 (aq) + 6 O2 (g)

CO2 = Carbon Dioxide
H2O = Water
C6H12O6 = Plant food
O2 = Oxygen - is what we need to breathe

Photosynthesis is a process that plants use for energy by processing carbon dioxide and water and releasing oxygen as a waste product. This process happens on a large scale where there are large concentrations of plant life - that is both throughout rainforests and the ocean. Yes respiration is the reverse process of this, yet rainforests like the Amazon are net producers of oxygen and fresh water. Thus - no brainer here - Rainforests and oceans (phytoplanktons) have a huge impact on our ecosystems. Screw it up in one part of the world and it will most certainly be affecting other parts of the planet. Rainforest destruction could very well be causing ocean acidification and changing weather patterns. Rainforest perservation should be placed at the top of the list.

Our hunger for resources is causing us to bleed our world dry. From research it is documented that 14% of our world was once covered in rainforest. It is continuing on a downward spiral and latest figures estimated it at 5%.  It is interesting to read that Brazil would like to relax regulations on deforestation, to allow farmers more access to cutting back rainforests. It is a worldwide problem because our world is an ecosystem and we are upsetting its balance.  If you want to voice a concern about the potential deforestation of the Amazon, have a look at this petition that the the Avaaz community has created. The big problem is - sorting out this problem does not make money and there has to be a think box to help countries like Brazil find a status for their rainforests - such as declaring them as world treasures, getting locals involved in their preservation and thus the world to contribute to help their preservation. However countries like Brazil need to show they have responsibly and conciously used these world funds to preserve their forests.

Rather than being complacent, make a pledge to your environment today. Here are some suggestions
- Reduce what you are using
- Reuse what you can - do you really need a new "whatever"
- Buy recycled products
- Look at using more renewable energy resources
- Grow your own vegetables

My Environmental Pledge
Having read much about our destruction to our weather regulators (our rain forests are still being documented as being decimated at an alarming rate and has been reduced from 14% to currently at 5%) from our craving for resources and thus leading to sea acidification and pollution,

I pledge to reduce my consumption rate of plastics and demand for "things" to reduce my inadvertant contribution to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, reuse as many resources as I can (yes this means trying to fix things) and have very little to recycle or to throw away to reduce demand for consumables and thus another inadvertant contribution to the destruction of our world's rainforests.
